Tailors vs. custom-made suits in Madrid
When someone thinks about having a custom-made suit, or any other garment, the first thing that comes to mind is a tailor . But a tailor isn't necessary to make custom clothing. In fact, in this section, we'll look at the difference between having a suit made by a tailor and having one made to measure. As we'll see later, the differences in the process for a custom-made suit and one made by a tailor also mean a difference in price.
A tailor always makes a handmade custom-made suit. What does this mean? Well, a suit is made from scratch. That is, no pattern is followed, but rather a unique one is created for the client. The tailor himself draws the pattern on the fabric and cuts it, and they assemble the different parts, creating a "bag" for the client to try on. Obviously, this takes more work and time to make, which increases the price. In return, you have a garment that has been created from scratch just for you.
On the other hand, we have the option of having an industrially tailored suit made. The word "industrial" sounds worse than "handmade," but it doesn't have to be. In this case, an existing pattern is used and adapted to the customer's measurements. In other words, there's no tailor drawing a pattern and cutting it; instead, measurements are taken, and from those measurements, the suit is constructed. This saves time and labor, as the existing pattern makes the process much faster.
Best tailors in Madrid and prices
At Hussars, we make custom-made suits and clothing using the second process. That is, we use patterns and customize everything to the client's taste. However, this custom work is not considered tailoring. So, before looking at what we do at Hussars, let's take a look at some of what we consider to be the best tailors in Madrid, in our opinion.
Fortunately, there are many excellent professionals in Madrid, which can make it a little more difficult to choose the best one . For us, several tailors stand out. Among them are Sastrería Serna , Toque de Sastre , and Joaquín Fernández Prats .
What's so special about these tailors that we highlight them among the best in Madrid? Well, there are several factors. First, they have years of experience with a large number of satisfied customers. Second, they have high-quality fabrics and their work is very fine. This places them at the top of the ranking of tailors in Madrid. For this reason, some of these tailors have clients as renowned as Florentino Pérez, Vicente Boluda, or well-known dukes and counts.
How do these tailors work? Typically, when a suit is made to measure, the artisanal process takes a considerable amount of time. A custom-made suit with a tailor requires about three months' lead time to ensure it arrives on time. The reason is that it's made from scratch, and numerous fittings with the client are required. It's not unusual for a handmade suit to require five or six visits to the tailor until the perfect fit is achieved.
This luxurious and exquisite workmanship translates into a price that, for some, can be high. For example, and although it depends on the tailor and the fabrics chosen, a custom-made suit from one of these tailors usually costs no less than 2,000 or 3,000 euros.
How we make custom suits and garments at Hussars
As we mentioned earlier, at Hussars, we don't make suits, but we make custom-made garments and suits . And how do we do that if we're not considered tailors? Well, by using patterns. That is, if you get a custom-made suit made with Hussars, we'll use an existing pattern and adapt it completely to your needs.

Does the fact that a pattern already exists mean that the suit can't be 100% customized? Absolutely not. The suit can be made exactly the way you want, including shape, fit, cut, fabrics, materials, buttons, or any other customization. The existence of a pattern simply facilitates and speeds up the process, as it serves as a base from which to work.
In other words, if you want the suit to have one, two, or three buttons, you can do it. If you want wider or narrower lapels, you can do it. If you want it in one color or another, you can do it. If you want a specific fabric, you can do it. If you want pants without a belt, you can do it. If you want your initials embroidered, you can do it. And so on.
And how long does it take to make a custom suit using this process? Well, it speeds up everything, and you can have the suit ready within a timeframe of four weeks.
Working this way, the number of visits is lower. Instead of 5 or 6, only 2 or 3 visits are required.
Ideally, a first visit is for taking measurements and selecting styles, fabrics, customizations, etc. A second visit is to try on the ready-made suit and make any necessary alterations, and a third visit is to pick up the final suit.
